Office Drawings and Office Rules: Notations from Everyday Work

Immediately upon entering the new building, visitors to the Lübeck municipal utility are confronted with the first office rule: “Assume the sensitive private person in the opposite direction”. While he is still thinking about this statement, he discovers the next rules on the multi-storey walls of the entrance hall. The recommendation “avoid contact with colleagues” is written there and the place of work is individualized with “elsewhere is not the same”.

The concept of Samuelis Baumgarte Art Consulting envisaged an artistic reflection by Stadtwerke Lübeck, which was also humorous, and which should be implemented with scriptural art. A limited artist competition was held, from which Peter Piller was unanimously chosen by the art committee as the winner.

Piller's office drawings were made during the years when he was working as an employee in the office of a Hamburg media agency. His experiences there with the everyday life of office workers, their daydreams, as well as his own, are reflected in anecdotal line drawings, which are underlaid with fine linguistic humor and can be found on the walls of the entrance hall along the corridor, past conference rooms to the canteen. Sometimes “Prosecco glasses float in weightlessness” on the way to the canteen, sometimes “the boss sits dead tired on the edge of the bed” in front of the large conference room. The viewer may consider whether he would not have saved himself the conference and could have left earlier - after all, another office rule awaits him in the conference room: “Perhaps a decision has already been made”.
