Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein

The Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein between Tradition and Modernity

The Kranichstein hunting lodge, built at the end of the 16th century by order of Landgrave Georg I of Hessen-Darmstadt, is located in a scenic area in the north of Darmstadt. Landgraves and Grand Dukes used it as a starting point for hunting before the reign of Landgrave Ludwig IX. the era of baroque hunting fun came to an end and par force hunting was abolished. Today the ensemble of buildings houses a cultural and historical museum as well as the Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein, the reopening of which was celebrated at the beginning of 2014.

In the course of the revitalization by the Bilfinger company, Samuelis Baumgarte Art Consulting was commissioned to develop a holistic art concept for the hotel. On the one hand, this should offer the opportunity to artistically play on central areas of the hunting lodge with available works. On the other hand, the concept should serve as a guideline for the gradual further implementation in order to guarantee a stringent design of the other hotel areas.

The concept presented by Samuelis Baumgarte Art Consulting provides for an artistic furnishing of the Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein, which underscores the elegant interior, the history of the place and the scenic surroundings incomparably for the suites as well as the public areas. The sophisticated design of the house is effectively complemented by trend-setting contemporary works of art, so that the guest is presented with a fascinating overall ensemble.

The central hall of the hunting lodge is shaped by a 12-part landscape cycle by Burkhard Kern, which reflects the idyllic surroundings of the hotel.

As a give-away for special guests, Patricia Thoma designed a motif that was laid out in an edition using stencil and spray technology. The crane, chosen to match the name of the hunting lodge, as the main protagonist in front of the silhouette of the building, refers to the historical site. An adaptation of the motif is planned for the suites.
